Beware of Cybercrime: 7 Easy Ways to Stay Safe on the Internet

In the digital age, the internet is a major part of our daily lives. From banking transactions, online shopping to social media—everything is now at our fingertips. But along with the benefits of technology, the risk of hacking and digital fraud is constantly increasing. Bank accounts emptying or personal information being lost due to a little carelessness is now an everyday occurrence. Learn the necessary techniques on how to keep yourself safe as a common user.

Common traps and types of fraud

Hackers often exploit people's ignorance more than sophisticated technology:

Phishing links: Fake lottery winning messages, electricity bill arrears notices or bank information by clicking on unknown links.

OTP scam: Calling pretending to be a bank or courier service official and asking for OTP.

Malicious apps: Downloading APK files containing malware from unknown websites outside the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Effective ways to stay safe

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Instead of relying solely on passwords, turn on two-step verification on all important accounts like Google, WhatsApp and Facebook. Even if your password is leaked, no one will be able to access your account without an additional security code.

Use strong and unique passwords: Do not create passwords using your name, date of birth or mobile number. Use a complex password of at least 10-12 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. It is important to have different passwords for different accounts.

Keep OTP and personal information secret: Banks or any financial institution never calls customers to ask for OTP, PIN, or CVV on the back of the card. Under no circumstances should you share this information with anyone.

Stop clicking on unknown links: Do not click on suspicious links in SMS, email, or WhatsApp. If you receive any offers or urgent warnings, go directly to the official website or app of the relevant organization to verify.

Do not install apps without trusted sources: Use only the official store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store) to download any application on your smartphone. Downloading apps from third-party sources is a serious risk to the security of the device.

Regular software updates: Update the operating systems and apps of mobile and computers regularly. Each update contains solutions to old security vulnerabilities.

Caution when using public Wi-Fi: Avoid using free Wi-Fi at stations, cafes or parks to conduct banking transactions or type passwords. The risk of information theft is highest on open networks.

If you are a victim of fraud, do not panic, but quickly block the card and net banking of the bank concerned temporarily and report the matter to the local police station or the national cybercrime helpline. The main key to enjoying the benefits of technology to the fullest is personal vigilance.
